What should you do if your vehicle begins to skid?

When your vehicle begins to skid, the most effective response is to steer in the direction you want the front of the vehicle to go. This technique is known as "steering into the skid" and helps regain control of the vehicle by aligning the wheels with the direction of travel.

In a skid, the tires lose traction and the vehicle can slide uncontrollably. By turning the steering wheel towards the intended direction, you allow the rear wheels to catch up with the front wheels, helping to stabilize the vehicle and reduce the possibility of spinning out.

Other approaches, such as steering toward the nearest curb or applying the brakes suddenly, can exacerbate the situation. Steering toward a curb may lead to further loss of control, and slamming on the brakes can lock the wheels, making it harder to maneuver. Continuing to drive straight is not advised because it does not address the loss of control the vehicle is experiencing.
